Laurel County Election Results

A little over 57% of Laurel County voters turned out Tuesday in the General Election. Locally, the main race was for City Council. Anthony Ortega was the top vote getter with 1,450, followed by Stacy Benge with 1,330, Kip Jervis with 1,303, Kelly Greene with 1,154, Holly Little with 1,080 and Justin Young with 1,015. Those six will fill the council in the upcoming term. The city of London also had a question regarding medical cannabis. The vote was 66% for and 34% against, joining other Kentucky cities in allowing cannabis operations in their towns. Laurel County joined the rest of the commonwealth in voting in favor of Amendment 1, which adds language to the state constitution, saying those who are not citizens of the United States cannot vote in Kentucky elections. The vote passed 18,468 to 7,321 in the county. Laurel County also joined the rest of the state in voting down Amendment 2, which would have allowed Kentucky lawmakers to use tax money to fund private and charter schools. The vote was 15,970 against and 10,904 in favor. Laurel County joined the rest of the state in voting overwhelmingly in favor of Donald Trump for President. Josh Bray easily won Laurel County for State Representative in the 71st District over Rachelle Riddle. All the other races for Representative were unopposed in the county. In School Board races where there was opposition, it was Kevin Murray defeating Ricky May 177 to 23 and Jody Elza won over Mequeil Storm 357 to 349.
