Kentucky State Police confirm they have taken the lead in the ongoing manhunt for Joseph A. Couch. Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office say they have exhausted their resources and are turning over the search to KSP. The sheriff’s Department will continue to assist. An estimated 40 to 50 law enforcement officers have been actively search a remote and wooded area near exit 49 off I-75. The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office confirms Couch purchased an AR-15 legally from a local business on Saturday. Kentucky State Police say Couch has a military background, serving four years in the National Guard. Officials searched Couch’s home on Sunday. Officials say twelve vehicles were hit by gunfire on I-75 on Saturday evening. They estimate at least twenty to thirty rounds were fired. County attorneys say Couch was charged with terroristic threatening in Knox County back in February, but the charge was dismissed. KSP Major Eric Walker said they have brought in additional troopers from other posts. The public is asked not to engage the suspect, instead should contact law enforcement since he is still considered armed and dangerous.
