A life-sized chess set has returned to downtown Corbin after being kept in storage for two years. The set first appeared on Main Street in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game was originally located where the current farmers market is now, to provide a unique addition to downtown. Outgoing director of Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission, Maggy Monhollen, said they felt at that time it would be safe because it was an outdoor activity and we could sanitize pieces after play. When the farmers market was in construction, the chess set went into storage, leaving many community members wondering where it went. The chess set is now located next to Sanders Park, at the end of Colonel’s Alley. The chess set will be put back into storage during the winter.
