Barbourville Independent Schools Announce New Curriculum

Barbourville Independent Schools officials say students there now have the chance to graduate with more than just a high school diploma. The school is using grant funding from the Full Service Community Schools to help fund pathways that give students real-world experience before they graduate, including drone piloting. Lori Looney, Project Director for Full Service Community Schools grant, said the kids come away from the program with a drone certification. School officials said that the goal is to get students connected within the community so they can create opportunities to improve their lives and their hometown community. The drone pilot curriculum is offered to the school through SkyOp LLC, making Barbourville Independent Schools the first in the commonwealth to partner with the group. Jason Reeves, Board Member for Barbourville Independent Schools, said they came up with the drone program after listening to what they felt both parents and students wanted to add to the curriculum. The school’s hope is that students will be able to use this new skill set and bring it to the region in multiple ways.
